There are three main parts to exercise and get fit work:
a) Cardio – eg activities like walking, running, swimming
b) Strength and Resistance: this is where some kind of force is applied to make the exercise movement harder eg resistance bands when stretching, free weights, fixed weights or just body weight
Sometimes the two are combined eg when working out on a rowing machine
c) Rest and Recovery
This is a vital part of any exercise regime but often overlooked; it might include sleep, rehydration, a change in exercise routine and/or help from disciplines like physiotherapy or massage
The rest and recovery stage is also the preparation stage for further exercise!
Massage can help with both preparation and recovery: easing aches and pains, increasing blood flow to the muscles and surrounding tissues, helping speed up the process of getting rid of toxins
What are your goals? No matter what your fitness goals are , a balance of all three should be considered.
If you are very unfit then do not suddenly embark on an exhaustive high-intensity programme! Look at low impact exercise two or three times a week, low weight ‘resistance’ and adequate ‘recovery’. You will achieve your goals far more effectively if you don’t start out by immediately injuring yourself by doing too much: those TV programmes that show people passing out with exhaustion have a lot to answer for!
