Some years ago I took part in a study on how to keep NHS employees working for longer! The survey asked for people over the age of 60 to take part. The “answer” that emerged (for me) was that this question needs to be asked much earlier if the NHS truly wants to retain experienced staff.
The same principle applies when we are evaluating our own health: if you are over 40 then you should be reviewing your lifestyle choices in regards to general fitness, strength, weight and nutrition etc.
Why – because you need to actually implement positive measures to maintain your health once you reach this stage of your life; if you simply coast along the path tends to head downwards!
Set aside an hour or two to review where you are now (in reference to the above) and where you hope to be in 20 years or so: physical flexibility and mobility, for instance, are closely linked to maintaining independence, financial and physical.
Warning: if you are very unfit please don’t rush off and enrol in something like a High Intensity workout programme; make one or two small changes and let your body adapt.
